Introduction of the Research Group

The research group develops experimental and simulation methods for the hydraulic and topological investigation of large-scale looped pipe networks, eg water supply networks, oil and gas pipelines, and compressed air systems. Measurement and computational methods are available to investigate both steady-state (pressures, flows) and transient conditions (water hammer, pump start/stop, sudden valve closure or pipe burst). Methods are available to predict the stability of pressure relief and control valves and to avoid harmful vibrations. We have a strong industrial integration: both with water utility operators and oil and gas companies with decades of experience.

Achievements

- Sensitivity analysis, topological optimization and robustness enhancement of large-scale looped networks.
- Simulation system for simulation of piping systems containing fluids, ideal and non-ideal gases.
- Determination of optimal pump/compressor operation strategies.
- Vibration, stability and interaction of valves with piping systems.
