BME Engineering Surveying Research Group is hosted at the Department of Geodesy and Surveying, Faculty of Civil Engineering. The primary mission of the RG is to find innovative solutions to problems that arise in a wide variety of applications in engineering surveying. Just to name but a few, load tests of large structures, like bridges, deformation monitoring, geometric quality control of constructions, and application of point cloud techniques for large-scale mapping and 3D modeling.
The RG started to develop a project, named ULYXES in 2008 to create a framework to drive robotic total stations, GNSS receivers as well as other sensors and publish observation results on the Internet. The main application of the project is automated monitoring of engineering structures. It is an open-source project and has already been tested with excellent results by our industrial partners, too.
The RG has gained a lot of experience in deformation monitoring of large industrial areas, like the Paks nuclear power station in Hungary. Both satellite-based and traditional land surveying techniques have been applied to detect deformations with enhanced (sub-millimeter) accuracy. New mathematical and statistical methods have been developed to evaluate the results.
Another research area of the group worth mentioning is the guiding of tunnel boring machines and geometric quality control of tunnels. The RG gained quite a lot of experience in geometric control of constructions using pipe bursting technology.
- Open-source framework to drive robotic total stations, GNSS receivers as well as other sensors in engineering surveying
- Methodological development of digital image processing to monitor deformations of engineering structures
- Geometric quality control of large construction projects
