Hosted at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Department of Environmental Economics and Sustainability has a more than 30 year history of teaching and carrying out research in topics related to both the narrower field of environmental economics and the broader economic and social aspects of sustainable development.
The Department has a double mission: to raise the environmental awareness of the students of the University studying in all its programs and to provide state of the art education to those studying in programs specialized in environmental and sustainability issues (eg environmental engineering, regional and environmental economics, etc.).
Apart from its widespread education activities, the Department carries out theoretical and applied research in the following fields:
- Corporate environmental and sustainability management
- Different aspects of climate change (eg climate adaptation in cities)
- Carbon accounting and decarbonisation
- The sustainability implications of the sharing economy and other innovative business models
- The role of prosumption in sustainable development
- Reduction of plastic waste in rivers
The Department is actively participating in the Hungarian and international academic community (eg the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the International Sustainable Development Research Society).
